3 year PhD studentships

PhD Training in Model Theory and Applications

MODNET funding is available for five 3-year PhD studentships in Model Theory and Applications at the following locations. The expected duration is 1 October 2005 - 30 September 2008. The funding will pay a living allowance, and includes generous allowances for travel and for participation in the training and research events of the Network. Successful applicants will undertake a programme of training and research leading to a PhD in an area relevant to the scientific activitites of the Network.

University of East Anglia, UK [position filled] Université Paris 7, France [position filled] University of Oxford, UK [position filled]
University of Barcelona, Spain [position filled] Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Germany
[position filled]
Several visiting studentships are also available.

Eligibility Criteria:

The European Commission has laid down precise rules about who is eligible for these positions. A guiding principle is that researchers should have to move from the country where they are currently studying, and will not be appointed in there own country. In particular:
  • Those appointed will be within 4 years of having obtained a degree which in their own country would allow them to qualify for a doctoral programme.
  • An appointment cannot be made in the candidate's own country.
  • At most two of those appointed can be from outside the EU and associated states.
It should be noted that there are exceptions to these rules and a more extensive summary can be found here. Full details can be found in the Marie Curie Research Training Network Handbook.

How to apply:

Potential candidates are encouraged to make initial inquiries to the named contact at the university to which they are considering applying, or to the Chair of the Appointments Committee (Elisabeth Bouscaren: modnetjobs_at_logique.jussieu.fr), or to the Co-ordinator of MODNET (David Evans: d.evans_at_uea.ac.uk). Language requirements vary at host universities and should be discussed with these contacts.

The Network will consider applications at any time from 1 January 2005 until all positions have been filled. Candidates are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Applications should be sent electronically to the Chair of the MODNET Appointments Committee (Elisabeth Bouscaren: modnetjobs_at_logique.jussieu.fr), and will be acknowledged by e-mail, usually within 7 working days

Applications will be considered by the MODNET Appointments Committee and by the candidate's preferred university (or universities).

Applications should include:
  • A detailed curriculum vitae containing:
    • The candidate's academic record to date
    • A description of the mathematical training already undertaken (lists of courses etc)
    • Details of any language qualifications
  • A statement of which positions the candidate wishes to apply for, together with justification of eligibility for the positions.
  • The intended area of research (if known) within the topics of the Network.
  • The names and addresses (postal and electronic) of two people willing to write a letter of recommendation for the candidate.
Host universities may also require candidates to provide additional documentation and complete further application forms.

Conditions of appointment:

Appointments in the UK will be on stipends; other appointments will be salaried. All appointed researchers will participate fully in the training and research events organised by MODNET. They will undertake a programme of research which has been agreed with their supervisor, and undertake any necessary language and skills training (such as training in lecturing) required by the supervisor and the Network Appointments Committee. To benefit from the wide expertise available in the Network, all appointed researchers will have at least one period of secondment to another university.
