MODNET is a Marie Curie Research Training Network in Model Theory and Applications funded by the European Commission under contract number MRTN-CT2004-512234. It will run for 4 years from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2008, and is designed to promote research and training in Model Theory and its applications to other branches of Mathematics.

These newsletters are distributed electronically to MODNET members and contain items on the administration of the Network as well as reports of the scientific activities of the Network such as visits funded by MODNET, new appointments made, announcements of new results, preprints and publications, forthcoming conferences .... . Items for inclusion in the Newsletter should be sent to the Network Coordinator, David Evans (d.evans_at_uea.ac.uk).

1. Forthcoming MODNET Events

  • The first MODNET RESEARCH WORKSHOP will be held at the University of Oxford, UK, from 3 to 7 September 2006. The themes of the Workshop are Pure Model Theory, Model Theory of Fields and Applications and o-Minimality and Applications. The organisers are J. Kirby, A. Wilkie and B. Zilber. Young researchers wishing to apply for funding to attend the meeting and give an invited talk are asked to send their proposals for a talk BEFORE 31 JULY. Further information can be found at the website:
    http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/logic/wsSept06.shtml
  • The MODNET MID -TERM REVIEW MEETING will take place in Mons, Belgium, on 22 January 2007. This will be a meeting between representatives of the European Commission, the Scientists in Charge at the Modnet partners, and Modnet fellows. The purpose is to discuss and review the progress and implementation of the Modnet project.
  • 2. Modnet positions currently available

    • A 6 month position for a post-doctoral researcher is available in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Camerino, Italy. The starting date is flexible, but should ideally be before May 2007. The possible domains of work for this position are
      • o-minimality and applications
      • Model Theory of Groups and Modules
The appointed researcher is expected to be based in Camerino and to work with Prof. Carlo Toffalori on one of these topics. A cooperation with Prof. Alessandro Berarducci (Pisa) is expected on the first topic. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Carlo Toffalori (carlo.toffalori_at_unicam.it). The closing date for applications is 31 AUGUST 2006. For details of how to apply, see the Modnet website:
      http://www.logique.jussieu.fr/modnet/positions/Postdoc.html

    • Applications are invited for a visiting PhD position in FREIBURG, starting in October 2006. The expected duration of the position is 12 months, although applications for stays of 6 months will be considered. The funding will pay a living allowance (at the salaried rate of an Early Stage Researcher under the Marie Curie scheme) and also includes generous allowances for travel and for participation in the training and research events of the Network. Applicants should already be registered for a PhD at their home university and are expected to return to their home university to complete their PhD on termination of the fellowship. The successful applicant is expected to work in one of the following areas: model theory of fields; stability and simplicity theory; finite model theory and complexity theory.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Martin Ziegler (ziegler_at_ruf.uni-freiburg.de) for further information before submitting an application. For details of how to apply see the Modnet website:
